Pre-Game Thoughts: Wizards vs. Celtics

Updated: November 2, 2007

The Debut of the Big Three

As Michael Lee wrote in today’s Wizards Insider posting, I am also a little suspect of the Celtics. They should finish a top 4 seed in the east, and they may run wild on the Leastern Conference during the regular season…but I’m not ready to anoint them as the champs like most other media outlets. Michael makes some great points…and all the aforementioned flags should be raised…lack of bench, haven’t been there before, etc.

As far as which of the Clover Three will be the man? Unquestionably it’s KG.

For one, he is the most imposing/menacing figure. Intimidating enough, but the guy also cusses up a storm – and that’s bound to make teammates a little edgy. If he’s upset, any Celtic, including Ray-Ray and Paul Peezy, will steer clear of his path (but I’m not saying he has the personality where he will step on anyone’s toes….he’s a pretty friendly guy). So, while I’m sure that Jesus Shuttlesworth and the Truth really want to win a championship, Garnett seems to posses that hunger…and this should spread to the rest of the vets on the team. Finally, KG is the only leader I can think of who can easily defer to others without losing his status of the alpha dog. Can you think of anyone…today or all-time? Steve Nash comes to mind…somewhat, the PG position is predisposed to deferring.

If the Celtics are to do anything this year, KG is at the bottom of the pyramid…just like his adidas commercial. They just better hope that they are challenged enough by teams this season. Nothing worse than having a great year, making the playoffs, and then folding under the pressure because that fox-hole mentality has not been built with any significant tests.
