Does Nick Young Deserve to Play in the NBA Rookie-Sophomore Challenge?
Yes, yes he does.
Nick Young has averaged 25.8 points on 71.6% from the field while knocking down 8 of 13 three point attempts in the last four games. Four out of 38 games, a mere tenth of the season to date, is a small sample. But overall, what are Young’s chances to suit up for the sophs in the NBA Rookie-Sophomore Challenge? Let’s look at some more numbers.
Nine players are selected for each team in the Challenge. Who are the locks?
As you see, I have PER, minutes per game, and points/rebounds/assists per 36 minutes listed. Can’t really argue with the numbers and what these guys are doing on the court. But that only leaves three spots left, and there are a lot of talented sophs out there.
Now I’m going to get all anonymous on you.
Those in yellow made the rookie team last year (as did Sean Williams and Juan Carlos Navarro…neither of those two are making it this year, JCN for obvious reasons).
Throw out the yellow highlighted PG and PF – Mike Conley (#9) and Yi Jianlian (#6). If Yi were healthy, I’d say he’d be a lock to make the team…..then again, don’t underestimate the power of the Chinese market and how the NBA caters to it.
You may also notice that this list is ranked by PER and the two at the top have the lowest minutes per game, vice versa for the two on the bottom.
If you analyze the current “lock” positions, the soph team doesn’t need another PG, sorry Aaron Brooks (#4). Down to six, need three.
Of those left, the three with the most minutes per game are obviously garnering the most attention. But how can you ignore someone who has been on fire lately…..the guy this post is about? Okay, you caught me. Young is the only SG on the list (#2)……seems like another wing scorer would be a must for the sophs.
The ultimate yay or nay?
The choices are tough, but I’m going green. So, Nick Young (#2), Al Thornton (#7), and Wilson Chandler (#8), please stand up.
Carl Landry (#1), Jamario Moon (#3), and Thaddeus Young (#5), you are sent packing. Actually, you don’t have to pack anything at all, you’re all staying home.
LINK: Hoops World has the same lineup, except Thaddeus Young instead of my biased selection. But if you go back and read that first paragraph, and made some presumptions on the future, then we’ll be cool.
