Remember when Ted Leonsis gave Gilbert Arenas a fist pound and called him a panther?
Me neither, I wasn’t there. But Ted blogged about it … the chance encounter between him and Arenas last October when they crossed paths in the Verizon Center parking lot the day after the Wizards won their season opener in Dallas.
The interaction probably took place near where an unnamed Wizard would one day unsuccessfully attempt to return Arenas’ bag of guns to his ride, opting instead to leave them somewhere in the parking garage when he couldn’t find the car.
The interaction from Ted’s Take:
I said, “Hi Gil. You lost some weight? Tell me your secret ’cause you look great.”
Gil says, “What do I look like? What kind of animal?”
I say, “A panther!”
Gil laughs, gives me a pound and says, “Yes, that is what I am and I am gonna pounce. I am a proud black panther!”
Fast forward to recently when Leonsis spoke to CSN Washington’s Russ Thaler about the Wizards and Gilbert Arenas. In the video (embedded below) that’s already made its way around the internets, Leonsis exclaims that he wants to “look Gilbert in the eye, see what makes him tick and understand what he’s thinking.” And getting to know the guy who Leonsis calls a “sweet kid” seemingly involves a hug and killing video game aliens.
Of course, Leonsis treads lightly, saying that he wants to do this within the “hierarchy” of the system — basically, not in so many words that Ernie Grunfeld and Flip Saunders will be around next season and that he is not interested in interfering with their jobs, but rather being a helpful part of the process.
All things you want to hear from a human being, much less the future owner of your team. Ted clearly means well, he’s a good man.
However, if I’m Gilbert Arenas, I eschew the video games and the ‘sweet kid’ persona in this instance. I tell Mr. Leonsis that I’m 28 years old and it’s time for me to start being a man.
Of course, I am not Gilbert Arenas.
