Enjoying The Fun of The Washington Wizards
| September 29, 2010 | 11:08 am

While I and others may criticize and analyze and break down the Washington Wizards to varying degrees, sometimes it’s best to sit back and appreciate that the game of basketball is fun, or at least it’s supposed to be. And that’s just what this team is trying to do, play ball and have fun. Of course, the millions they make comes with strings attached. Darn. So for now, enjoy the fun of some choice cuts from Media Day to Midnight Madness in pictures and video … at least until we starting counting wins and losses, and judging effort, and crunching advanced stats, and deciphering measured locker room comments, and analyzing coaching decisions, and etc….

JaVale McGee Is A Man At Peace – Wizards Media Day 2010
| September 28, 2010 | 10:33 pm

In the summer of 2006, Gilbert Arenas was cut from the United States national team that was to compete in the 2006 FIBA World Championships (Kirk Hinrich made the final roster).  National Team Managing Director, Jerry Colangelo, attributed the early exit to the groin Arenas injured while going up for a dunk in practice.  Arenas said he never really got a fair shot to make the team.

“No joke, I felt like I was the 16th man on a 15-man roster. You are there to support your team and support your country and be happy to play but you know, I did everything they wanted me to do; but if I did everything they wanted me to do, why am I on the bubble of getting cut? I sacrificed. You’ve got LeBron being LeBron. You’ve got Carmelo being Carmelo. You’ve got D-Wade being D-Wade. Why can’t I be me? Why do I have to transform? I did that and now you are going to cut me?”

Due to this perceived slight, Arenas vowed to get his revenge when the regular season started.  Portland Trailblazers coach Nate McMillan, Mike D’Antoni (then the coach of the Phoenix Suns) were assistant coaches for Team USA, and Arenas said he’d do his best to wreak havoc on their respective teams.

“I’m going to be the silent assassin this year.  I can’t wait to play the Suns and Portland. Against Portland, Nate McMillan, I’m going to try to score 100 in two games and against D’Antoni, I’m going to score 100 in two games. I’m going to try.”

Arenas ended up averaging 42 points a game against the Suns and just 14 points a game against the Trailblazers.

Ted’s Take On: Team Colors, Solemn Gil, Blatche’s Extension and Management’s Expectations
| September 28, 2010 | 7:22 pm

Ernie Grunfeld recently, somewhat, let the cat out of the bag regarding an impending team color scheme change — which was really inevitable anyway, it’s just that hearing a formality from the team president of basketball operations before it comes from the blogging owner of transparency, Ted Leonsis, perks up some ears.

Leonsis made himself available to the media toward the end of Monday’s Midnight Madness, even though I imagine he was pretty exhausted from his travels. He had meetings regarding the NHL, American Express and the NBA in New York City during the day on Monday, and said, “I didn’t think I’d get back here in time. I was really tired, but I walked in and all these kids were screaming and hollering, and now I have a lot of energy.”

I figured I’d ask him about the color change (to red, white and blue), to see if he was ready to make some sort of announcement … that’s not an “as you know” as the end of the press conference.

[As an aside, I think I'm ready to claim "As you know..." as Ernie Grunfeld's go-to equivalent of Antawn Jamison's "And things of that nature ..." and Mike Miller's "It is what it is."

And while I'm at it, I probably need to stop peppering in the word "kinda" at irrelevant places when I'm interviewing players, something I've noticed over time. It's kinda like my "uh..." or whatever speaking pauses/fillers that people have.]

Al Thornton Throws The Pounds Away – Wizards Media Day 2010
| September 28, 2010 | 2:16 pm

The Los Angeles Clippers threw Al Thornton away.

Maybe there were good reasons, maybe there weren’t, but after roughly two and a third years removed from making the NBA’s All-Rookie First Team with Kevin Durant, Jeff Green, Luis Scola, and Al Horford, Thornton was essentially given away by Los Angeles last February to save money. In the three-team Antawn Jamison trade involving the Wizards and Cleveland Cavaliers, the Clippers sent away Sebastian Telfair (to Cleveland) and Thornton and got back Drew Gooden (from Washington), whom they didn’t retain as a free-agent this summer.

Al Thornton, a former lottery pick, was thrown away … and he noticed.

This off-season, with a possible starting position in view on a rebuilding team, especially with Josh Howard likely to miss some time at the beginning of the year as he recovers from a torn ACL, Thornton recommitted himself to his own game and his team.

Catching Up With Cartier Martin: New Dad Looking For A Roster Spot
| September 28, 2010 | 10:08 am

The last time we saw Cartier Martin, he was lighting up the New York Knicks in the Vegas Summer League for 24 points, and wondering if that was enough to earn a roster spot on the Washington Wizards — or at the very least an invite to training camp.

When I saw Martin on Monday’s Media Day, he looked like a man who did not have a care in the world.  He was practicing his post moves with Kevin Seraphin, and joking with Hamady N’diaye about the advantages of playing in the NBA versus playing in Europe.  At first glance, you would have no idea that Martin was about to be in the fight of his life for a roster spot on the Wizards roster.

Right before the team cameramen whisked him away for a photo shoot, I got a chance to catch up with Martin and ask him a few questions about his summer, his experience with the team toward the end last year

John Wall’s Got Jokes For Gilbert Arenas
| September 27, 2010 | 7:20 pm

There was a moment between Gilbert Arenas and John Wall at Wizards Media Day on Monday afternoon, a brief exchange which I described in the previous post that seemed to slightly reflect a developing bond between the two.

The returning smile from Arenas in response to Wall’s presumed mocking/joking with him about the pains and process of media attention eluded the cameras of Truth About It.net. But I was able to snap a couple photos and TAI’s Adam McGinnis was able to shoot some video of the fun-loving Jimmy Wall in all his glory.

In the big picture, this silly little incident doesn’t mean much. But it’s also been a long time since Wizards fans witnessed positive interactions between Arenas and his teammates. And it was especially interesting on a day where Arenas was trying his hardest not to smile.

I asked Wall about that moment and the relationship he’s built with Arenas, he said: Read more »

The Quiet Man Is Back: Gilbert Arenas Emerges Bearded From His Cocoon
| September 27, 2010 | 5:27 pm

[Gilbert stands where he's told as the Washington Post's Mike Wise, a reporter/columnist
who's covered Arenas' rise and fall as close as anyone, looks on in the background
.]

You could tell from the second Gilbert Arenas started his descent down the stairs to the Wizards’ practice court at the Verizon Center … the mean man, the quiet man, the unexcitable version of Arenas we saw before last season, had returned (sans fines for not talking to the media, so far). Well, at least this describes the facade Arenas has resurrected in his on again, off again relationship of gamesmanship with the public media.

Gilbert, in nature, appeared to be just as reclusive on Monday’s official Wizards Media Day, looking like in front of the media spotlight is the last place he wants to be. That he just wants to play basketball is the seemingly earnest tune he’s singing again. In appearance, the bushy bead that accompanied him drove home the point. Comparisons to Harrison Ford in the movie The Fugitive, or to Ricky Williams when he surfaced from wherever he was for a spell from that segment on 60 Minutes, or to Grizzly Adams, who actually did have a beard, pinged back and forth amongst attending members of the media.

{Gilbert's awaiting scrum.}

The somber facial expression conveyed by Arenas might make an acting school newbie envious, but I’m not buying it. It’s not the real Arenas. As the media scrum herded themselves in a circle of sweat and stank, developed under hot camera lights and close confines around an empty table, jostling for position and anticipating the arrival of Arenas, the calm Agent formerly known as Zero kept a straight face.  In a far corner of the gym, just outside of the curtain where he was set to speak to a mass public for the first time in months, Gilbert stood patient, at least much more patient that the awaiting press, as he was debriefed and retained by members of the Wizards, public relations staff.

Al Thornton, John Wall, Nick Young.]

Gilbert Arenas, we meet again. More come back attempts than Lindsay Lohan, and you’d be hard-pressed to determine which one wants more attention. And that’s the key part of the Arenas “re-embracing” by Washingtonians and the media beast.

Andray Blatche: Here I Am Again – 2010-11 Player Preview

The Intro.

-by Rashad Mobley

Last year during Media Day, Andray Blatche looked like a man on the brink of a monster season.  He had used his appearance in the 2009 Vegas Summer League to get in shape, he changed his number to “7″ because he planned on working hard seven days of week, and he talked like a man who had finally put the immaturity and inconsistency behind him. Andray Blatche No Longer Underpaid, We Think
| September 25, 2010 | 9:49 pm

The contract of Andray Blatche has been extended through the 2014-15 season, as first reported by Michael Lee of the Washington Post and then made official by the team. Wizards fans should be relieved, but also a tad curious.

Late last March, barely a month removed from the trade deadline and the jettisoning of Caron Butler, Antawn Jamison, Brendan Haywood and Abe Lincoln neck tat, Andray Blatche had the below choice quotes from an interview with FanHouse:

“I look at the situation as being underpaid,” Blatche, 23, said in an interview with FanHouse. “I understand why I got the contract that I got and I make the best of it.”

[...]

“Definitely next year, if I’m going out and I’m doing the same thing and I become an All-Star player, it’s definitely going to bother me a lot because I’m definitely going to feel underpaid and like I’m not being appreciated,” Blatche said. “But there’s nothing I can do about that.”

Grunfeld Chats on John Wall, Yi Jianlian, Adam Morrison and The New-Look Wizards
| September 25, 2010 | 9:38 am

Wizards GM Ernie Grunfeld addressed the media on Thursday afternoon and the major theme of his remarks was the team is in the “beginning of a new era.” While the most newsworthy item took place when the cameras were off, Grunfeld did give highly informational updates on various players.

Here Ernie talks about how John Wall will handle the extra attention placed upon the number one draft pick and discusses the games of the new youngsters:

Grunfeld details why the Wizards brought in two former lottery picks, Yi Jianlian and Adam Morrison:

JaVale McGee: A Wookie In Question – 2010-11 Wizards Player Preview
| September 24, 2010 | 5:21 pm

[Wizards 2010-11 Player Preview Index: Gilbert Arenas, Hilton Armstrong, Andray Blatche,
Trevor Booker, Kirk Hinrich, Josh Howard, Yi Jianlian, JaVale McGee, Kevin Seraphin,
Al Thornton, John Wall, Nick Young.]

The Intro.

-by Stephen D. Riley

It wasn’t hard to spot JaVale McGee’s mom dukes in the crowd at the Las Vegas Summer League this past July. Pamela McGee is an attractive woman, so the cameraman made sure to give her plenty of face time. Commentators went on and on about the second overall draft pick of the 1997 WNBA Draft and how the former USC standout used to run with Cynthia Cooper and Cheryl Miller back in her heyday. Broadcasters referenced how the two McGees share the only mother-son relationship between the NBA and WNBA, so naturally, basketball browsers assumed that JaVale got his athletic ability from his mom. But did you know that JaVale’s father, George Montgomery, was a pretty good hoopster in his own right?

Ernie Grunfeld Let’s The Cat Out of The Bag, Wizards To Change Team Colors for 2011-12
| September 23, 2010 | 4:23 pm

Back in early August, when it was revealed that the New Jersey Nets had filed paperwork to change their team name, I got curious, did the Wizards do the same thing?

Evidently so, as team president Ernie Grunfeld let it slip this afternoon that the team would be switching their colors to red, white and blue for the 2011-12 season.

When I asked in August, team spokespeople were relatively mum … aside from a “Ted likes red” {wink, wink}. A league spokesperson wouldn’t comment either, other than indicating that, “if a franchise wanted to change its team name or colors, paperwork must be filed 24 months prior to the start of the season when the team wants to make the change.”

Basically, it became understood that the Wizards would eventually change their team colors to incorporate red, but an announcement would be made on their own terms, i.e., with the marketing pizazz that Ted Leonsis has became known for (See: Midnight Madness, PA Announcer Tryouts).

Uh oh, Ernie Grunfeld.
