Maybe lottery scratchers are a barometer for the heirarchy of relevance amongst D.C. pro sports teams. The Redskins have teamed up with the Virginia Lottery to peddle $10 and $20 dollar scratch tickets at various points in time. Last season, the D.C. Lottery teamed up with the Washington Capitals for a $5 scratcher that received various amounts of fan fare. But what about the Wizards?
Well, the long-awaited event that you didn’t even know you were waiting for has finally happened… Wizards-themed D.C. Lottery scratchers are now available for the lean and mean price of $2 each (they’ve been on the market since October 3). Here’s the catch: nowhere on the ticket does the word “Wizards” appear. Instead, customers get only the new lower-case ‘DC hand-to-basketball’ logo, as well as the ‘Washington Monument inserting itself into a star over a basketball’ logo.
For those scouring the earth for evidence of the slow phasing out of a despised and irrelevant team nickname, this is one of those pieces of evidence. It could totally mean absolutely nothing.
So rejoice, Wizards fans. Even though you hope to not see your team in the NBA draft lottery for seasons to come, you can still throw down two bucks to celebrate lottery memories with a 1-in-100,000 chance to win $6,000 or a 1-in-4.57 chance to win anything at all.
And if you’re wondering about the Wizards’ chances, according to Bovada.lv, Washington has 200-to-1 odds to win the 2013 NBA championship, which is in line with the aspirations of the Cavaliers, Pistons, Raptors, and Kings, but definitely better than the Bobcats (500-to-1 odds). Playoffs? Washington’s over/under on wins was set at 31.5 by Bovada, which when compared to the over/unders of other Eastern Conference teams, it would place the Wiz as the 10th best team in the conference, and unfortunately, out of the playoffs.
But, that’s why you play the games. And just like I tell myself with the lottery sometimes, you can’t win if you don’t play.
