LAS VEGAS — The Washington Wizards won their second summer league contest on Sunday evening over the Minnesota Timberwolves, 67-61, pushing their record to 2-0. After the game, the leading trio of Sam Cassell, Otto Porter, and Glen Rice once again discussed the game, amongst other things. One of those other things was the newest Wizard, Paul Pierce.

Cassell on how he imagines Porter and Rice learning from Pierce:

“It’s a blessing in disguise to have a guy like Paul Pierce come into this team, especially for Otto. It’s a blessing when you have that kind of leadership and that kind of experience coming to the team. He’s going to uplift this whole ball club. It was big that we got him, huge…just in our locker room.

He was captain of the Celtics for 13, 14 years. That’s not too easy to get, and he had it for a long, long time. When we won the championship, Kevin (Garnett) the Ticket wasn’t the captain. Ray (Allen) wasn’t the captain. Paul Pierce was the captain. That’s big.”

Porter on the Pierce signing:

“It’s great. He plays my position. He’s been a leader, he’s a champion. Just to have that on my side really helps me out, especially my second year.”

“Like I said, it’s a business. This league is a business. Kind of figured that they were going to get somebody. Great pickup.”

Rice on the Pierce signing and the first thing he wants to ask the veteran:

“That was definitely a good pickup. The first thing I thought was some of the things he can teach me. Paul Piece, he shoots it very well. He’s just so crafty. Not the fastest, not the strongest, but he’s just so crafty. He gets it done, consistently.”

“I just want to ask him how he just draws fouls and he just gets his shot up so well.  I just want to know… he’s got to teach me a couple of little things. I know that he knows something that I don’t know for him to be able to get all those shots up.”
