During Washington’s Media Day on Monday, Bradley Beal was asked about the best backcourt in the NBA.

“That is a rhetorical question, you know that I am going to say me and John,” replied the Wizard’s 21-year-old starting shooting guard. “I think we are definitely the best backcourt in the league. Just in terms of what we are capable of doing and the confidence we have in that. At the same time, we have to prove it.”

On Tuesday, Beal’s Media Day comments were presented to Cleveland Cavaliers guard Dion Waiters, who was selected one spot after Beal in 2012. Via ESPN’s Dave McMenamin:

“That’s nonsense,” Waiters said after practice Tuesday. “(Beal is) supposed to say that, but I know deep down, he’s not messing with me and Ky (Kyrie Irving).

“I think me and Ky are the best backcourt, young backcourt. That’s all.”

After Washington’s first practice on Tuesday, Waiters’ “nonsense” comment was relayed to Beal’s backcourt mate, John Wall.

“Why he (Waiters) think that? They haven’t seen a playoff game yet so when they make one, they can start talking,” said Wall.

John then added this barb:

“But if you are going to be the best backcourt, you have to start. This is the year that he (Waiters) is probably starting, so let’s see if they are best back court. You gotta be a starting backcourt to say you are the best backcourt.

Wall’s look says it all.

Wall was not done with the Cavs and took a subtle jab at Kyrie Irving.

“This is how I see it: I have never been healthy most of my career. The first three years I don’t make the playoffs. ‘I’m not a point guard, I can’t lead my team.’ You have other guys who haven’t seen the playoffs yet but have individual goals, like I said, they get all the praise.”

He was later asked about why he believes that he is continually overlooked.

“I have no idea why I am overlooked. I am not a great shooter, but I’ve improved. You can’t tell me every year that I haven’t improved. When I was healthy, I improved. I am one of the most complete point guards in the league. I rebound, assist, play defense, steal, score. I don’t know why I am overlooked. I am still trying to figure it out.”

Wall emphasized that true accolades in NBA are earned by team success.

“If you are picking talent off of individual play, then it is good to be considered that, but I am person that cares about team play. The main thing is that I want to win. That is how you get known as a point guard … is winning.”

The Wizards and Cavaliers’ first meeting in 2013-14 will be at the Verizon Center on Friday night, November 21 (on ESPN). GIDDY UP!
