The All-Star reserves were named on Thursday night and the NBA’s coaches didn’t vote any Wizards into the game (John Wall was voted in as a starter last week), but Wizards Center Marcin Gortat was somewhat surprisingly in the running to make the game in New York City.

On Friday afternoon, I asked the big man for his thoughts on being omitted:

“I didn’t really have high hopes of making the All-Star. My hopes went up when I seen the final voting. My name was fourth in voting so there was a chance that I might make it … time with each day, that hope was becoming smaller and smaller.

“But let’s be honest: this is politics in this league, unfortunately, there is a lot of politics in this league. Did I deserve to be on this team in the All-Star? Uh, some people said yes, some people say no … but politics is unfortunately what the league is.”

Gortat emphasized that he didn’t have a large enough social media following to finish at the top of fan voting but he was appreciative of the support he received, especially from his home Poland.

“Guy has few million followers on Twitter, I have 67,000, I can not compete with that. I did have 40 million people standing behind me, the whole country. I am really proud of my country, what they did for me. I tell you right now, they are quite pissed right now.

“I am quite sure next year, I will win this voting… I am just really grateful for everything, all they did for me. My countrymen, all the athletes, all the big figures in Poland, including politician people, all the teams, all the athletes and celebrities.”

Fans attending Saturday night’s Wizards game against the Toronto Raptors game will receive a free Marcin Gortat action figure. The Polish Hammer reviewed the cool toy after practice on Friday:

“We actually verified everything… Everything is fixed as you can see. The belt area was created so you can move those legs. Like I said before, those legs are really beefy. I don’t think that I have beefy legs like that. My upper is a little big bigger, I think.

“Basically, it is really cool action figure. The cape is amazing and I am really excited. The beard is even better… I definitely excited to make a lot of kids back happy in Poland. I am hoping that everyone enjoys the action figure tomorrow at the game.”

Gortat confirmed to me that this is the first toy made in his likeness:

“I have never had an action figure, never had a bobblehead. It took me eight years to have my first action figure. I will try to be a super hero tomorrow and win the game.

“I have a few hundred sent back to Poland, for the kids, at my camps. I have a few requests from adults, too, but we are going to keep those low.”

Gortat unveiled a signature Mohawk this season. For the second time, he hinted at shaving it off.

“I got to come back to being bald soon,” Gortat said while pointing at the smooth head of his action figure. “I am thinking about it, really soon.”

I mentioned to Gortat about a Twitter account dedicated to his mohawk. This online admiration did not sway him from a potential new hair-do choice.

“I think it is time. Too much time to take care of it, to keep it fresh. It is going to go away soon.”

Gortat’s Mohawk is not taking the news well.
