On the Wizards beat, one of the my favorite events to cover is the annual Halloween event at the Verizon Center. This year was another gem. Washington hosted hundreds of kids at the 400 concourse level of the arena on Monday evening. The team set up various coloring and face painting stations while handing out healthy snacks. Corn hole, hot shot, and a DJ dance music area were a hit. The Wizard Girls and G-Wiz were in attendance.

The party started to liven up when Otto Porter, Kelly Oubre, and DeJuan Blair arrived in their costumes. Porter was “Special K” from the Harlem Globetrotters, and Oubre went as “Steve Urkel” from the TV show Family Matters. Blair was a shark and his baby daughter was with him in a lady bug outfit. Young fans mobbed the players for pictures and autographs.

“It is all love for the kids. We are having a good time,” Porter told me. He explained his Globetrotter Style: “I wanted to do something for the kids. Spice it up for the little kids. Since we are around basketball, I wanted to do something about basketball. It also is representing the red, white and blue. D.C. colors,” said Porter.

Last year, Porter was a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, Michelangelo. “It is awesome, be here with the little kids, giving back,” said Porter. “It is just a fun event. Fun time. Halloween coming up. Our first [home] game is on Halloween, so it going to be wild.”

Oubre discussed his choice to be Steve Urkel: “Trying to go for fashion on the nerd side.”

He had dangerous Halloween experiences in his hometown of New Orleans. “I lived in a neighborhood where guys brought actual knives to go trick or treating. So that suspense of running from people with real knives is what I grew up doing,” he said.
The rookie said his favorite candy is Hershey’s Cookies and Cream and that has a Jason mask he wears at various times all year. “I used to be a Ninja alot. I had a black belt in karate. So I could actually play the part, just in case anyone tried me. I was always that character, in this frame of mind.”
The 19-year old-definitely enjoyed his time with the little ones. “It is great. Lots of kids smiling. I feel lots of good energy in the air. Lot of fans are very happy,” Oubre said. “I feel good to put a smile on their face for the Wizards.”
