GAME PREVIEW: Washington Wizards vs. Utah Jazz
| February 2, 2008 | 12:33 am

Needless to say, without Caron Butler tonight, the cards are stacked high against the Wizards. Utah is a damn good team with some very diverse pieces. And you gotta have the utmost respect for Jerry Sloan. Just two years ago, people were calling him washed up. During trying times, he remained stoic, did not complain one bit, and took his lumps like a man. Twenty years as a head coach in the game will put some rings around your trunk. Good for him.

From Wizards Insider: Butler did some light shooting this morning, but is still questionable. I bet that he plays considering that both he and Jamison are All-Stars, motivation son. AD and his tweaked ankle also should start.

Jeezy….we can only hope that no more damage is done tonight, the trainer has been asking for a raise. I like the depth and bench of this Wizards team, just not when they are depended upon to produce wins. Because as Wages of Wins informs us, Nick Young is one of the 10 worst players in the NBA. Now, we all know this young guy has the potential to be special…just some rookie blues, maybe he can start using these slights like Gil.

Also, from 82games.com, it’s not surprising that Stevenson, Jamison and Butler are the Wizards ‘Big Three’ this year. Not to shabby that they’re the 9th best ‘Tres Grande’ in the NBA. Number 8 on the list is tonight’s opponent, the Jazzy Trio of AK-47, D-Will and the Booz.

Oh yea…the huge news around the blogosphere, the world, the net, the coffee pot, the afternoon snack den, your mom’s book club this afternoon is that Kwame ‘Tiny Hands’ Brown got traded to the Memphis Grizzlies with Pau Gasol going to La-La Land as the principles of the deal. I’ve always felt that Gasol was kin to Mr. Softy…but that’s only when he has to play the role of the head honcho. Now that he can sit back and be the second, maybe even the third potato….(hell, when Bynum comes back, probably 4th in line)….uh yea, the Lakers are going to be scary.

Live Game 44 Blog: Washington Wizards @ Toronto Raptors
| January 31, 2008 | 12:50 am

If you missed it…..I had a mini-game preview for tonight’s game. Mostly, it’s about recent comments by another blogger in regard to my Washington Wizards.

Let’s start the show.

1st Quarter

10:30 – The Raptors hit their first three shots to go up 6-0 before Steve Buckhantz and Phil Chenier can finish their ‘Keys to the Game’ for both teams.

10:05 – Check that, 4-4….timeout Eddie Jordan, 8-0 Raptors. The Wiz have attempted to go inside to Haywood a couple times, but the Raptors have come out aggressive on D, collapsing on the post.

9:37 – 10-0, after the timeout, a Jamison TO and a Moon putback off a Blatche block on Parker. The Wizards needed to come out swinging….they needed to punch the Raptors in the mouth first. They didn’t. So far, the Wiz have committed 2 turnovers.

8:40 – Stevenson finally breaks the ice with a triple. He’s been streaky lately, I hope he picks his spots tonight. 12-3 Toronto.

PREVIEW: Washington Wizards @ Toronto Raptors – Part Deux
| January 30, 2008 | 10:10 pm

Well, back to the grind.

I tell you what, the Toronto Raptors almost ripped my heart out last night. I just don’t know if I could have taken an OT loss after Milwaukee and especially after last year’s Ruffin Ball Toss Gaffe, which has been revisited on pretty much every show that covers sports. What’s that you say? You want to re-live Steve Buckhantz’s call from that game last year over and over and over again? Well, just click on the link to the odd site found via Bullets Forever.

Anyway….this game is big….hell, they’re all big….yada, yada, yada.

Simply put, I don’t want to see any complacency with last night’s win. If the Wiz lose tonight, they lose….but don’t go down without a fight fellas!

We’ve all heard of so-called “Bulletin Board” material. I suppose that it transfers to the blogger world as well. Our humble Canadian friends at Dinosty had some choice things to say about the Wizards in a post about last night’s game.

“Let’s be honest, Andre Blatche won’t look like KG every night, DeShawn Stevenson won’t earn his ludicrous salary every night, but Roger Mason* WILL look like an rejected extra from “How Stella Got Her Groove Back”. Every. Single. Night.”

The breaking news is that Caron Butler is out tonight with a hip, and perhaps tomorrow night as well.

No one cares and neither should you.

Wizards fans did not care the last time Washington played Toronto in the 17th game of the season, when Chris Bosh was out with a groin.

And I did not give a damn that Michael Redd was out on Sunday.

But how to feel if you’re a Wizards fan? If myths such as the “Curse O’ Les Boulez” are not said out loud or typed on message boards, then they are most likely thought.

But it is an easy out to get all fatalistic up in this piece. Some on Bullets Forever, myself included, were unsure about this game even before the news about Tuff Juice dropped.

But always wanting to be that guy who focuses on the positives, here is what we should look for in this game:

Great game between the Celtics and Magic today, but a bitter-sweet win for Orlando. I certainly cannot find myself rooting for a team from Boston. And I like Türkoğlu, they’re calling him Mr. 4th Quarter in O-Town and I think he deserves an all-star nod this year (not sacrificing Jamison or Butler of course), but the Wiz need to Magic to lose. I want that SE Division.

Michael Redd didn’t face the Wizards last time. At first it looked like he was going to play tonight, but he hurt himself in the Bucks last game against Toronto and will not see the court.

Lotta sports going on now. G-Tech just made it a game with UVA. The Lakers and the Cavs are on….didn’t think I’d find myself rooting for the Lakers either, but I’d also like the home court advantage in the playoffs. Dook and Maryland come on soon.

But the Wizards-Bucks are front and center, so let’s start the show….

Live Game 41 Blog: Washington Wizards vs. Memphis Grizzlies
| January 26, 2008 | 12:11 am

Ok, these Memphis boys got the Wiz last time in unlucky game 13. It was a high scoring affair, 124-118, with Jamison dropping 41 and three Grizzlies +20 in the scoring column, and two with 17. Little Juan Carlos Navarro, or as Eddie Jordan calls him…”Antawn Jamison on the perimeter”…dropped a career/season high 28 points, dialing up 5-8 from long distance.

Bullets Forever with tonight’s game preview.

I’m not going to talk about that other game, you know which one (this needs to be my only memory). I’m just confident that everything is going to add up tonight. The Wiz will return to their defensive ways. Yeah, the Grizz may score a lot, but it should not be easy for them. Memphis will have to work on offense, which will make an already sorry defensive team even worse.

A couple quick Washington Wizard links:

DC Sports Bog Video: Antonio Daniels has a hard nose. He would also like to tell the children to dress well. And one thing I learn from the AD’s video is that I’m one up on an NBA player in something……I got 10,000+ songs on my ipod…and that can take on your 9,000 any day Antonio. You hear me son? That’s a challenge.

Thanks to the DC Sports Bog, we’ve all been educated a little more about the “style” of the Washington Wizards. Cool, they exchange clothes like a bunch of girls. But he, it looks like the locker room rearrangement is working. Nick Young was not able to escape the veteran wrath of DeShawn Stevenson because he now sits next to Caron Butler.

Scott Van Pelt Style has an interesting post on a recent quote from Antawn Jamison. At face value, it can, as a Wizards fan, be frustrating that the team, Jamison could have been playing better defense this whole time….at least in theory. But hey, I’m going to live in the present on this one. My comments on SVPS went something like this: “Hey, I take comfort in the fact that AJ is willing to admit his mistakes and that if he has the will, an old dog can certainly learn new tricks.”

—— On to the game….

Yup. The Wizards beat the Celtics, twice. Took care of the Mavs. The NBA started to listen. But this is a statement game. Washington beat Cleveland earlier this year, but let’s only count that in the wins column….no where else. LBJ is on the court and this one is for real.

Show, start it.

Live Game 39 Blog: Washington Wizards vs. Dallas Mavericks
| January 21, 2008 | 6:11 pm

This is going to be a tough one, but aren’t they all?

We remember that the Wizards beat the Mavericks in Dallas back in game 14 of the season. The keys to beating the Mavericks today remain pretty much the same as they were then.

  1. The Bullets need to start the game off hot with buckets – In these last 5 games, the Wizards really only game out balling on offense in last Friday’s home win against the Knicks. Luckily in the other 4 games, the Wiz were able to win 3 of them with tight defense.

Although….Caron Butler and Antawn Jamison combining for 62 points as they did that night in Dallas wouldn’t hurt.

  2. Contain Devin Harris and dribble penetration, the key ingredients to the ignition of the Dallas offense. In game 14, Harris had 7 points, 7 assists and 0 turnovers at halftime. He didn’t do anything in the 2nd half save for scoring 5 points.
  3. Energy & Hustle – yea, you can say they need this every game…but especially against an explosive team such as the Mavs. I’m sure that Dallas fans have written off that first loss as a bad shooting night as the Mavs went 3-21 from 3-point land. I attribute that to great defense. Not only did Washington limit paint penetration, but they also did a great job at contesting shots. Back then, nothing came easy for Dallas. Let’s make that the case today.

Live Game 38 Blog: Washington Wizards vs. New York Knicks

I gots revenge on my mind from the last Wizards game against the Knicks, game 37.

First of all…..Etan Thomas really hasn’t been cleared to practice, not yet. Slam Mag catches up with Etan. Godspeed.

It’s been reported that Antonio Daniels is a game-time decision. But it looks like he is going to play tonight. All is copacetic.

So…knowing that, let’s start the show….

1st Quarter

The game starts off and the Verizon Center looks like one big hot box (yup, actually a Wikipedia entry) from the laser smoke.

Looks like the Big Lead is endorsing Caron Butler as the NBA’s Most Improved Player now that Andrew Bynum is out with a knee.

Slam Online‘s game notes of the Washington Wizard win in Bean Town by Ben Collins and Jonathan Evans…….where:

  • Andray Blatche is compared to Cloverfield.
  • They are wondering about all those offensive fouls called on the Wizards in the 4th Quarter, as was I — A 300 pound Big Baby drawing charges? Please.
  • They call Caron Butler “pliable pudding”, making fun of the Tuff Juice nickname — of course, this was right before the Celtics built that 77-63 lead with just over 6 minutes left in the game…..little did Johnny and Benjamin know. Is all forgiven? NOPE!
  • We learn that DeShawn Stevenson has taken a page from Caron’s book by shooting around with a straw in his mouth.

Tonight’s game against the Knicks…..yea, yea, let down game, right? I think not. First of all, Jamison and Butler do not play the role of the fool, holmes. They know better. Plus, the Knicks dismantling of the Detroit Pistons the other night is a good thing. The Wizards will see it as just a little splash of water to the face…..meaning, as dysfunctional as they are, don’t sleep on the New York Knicks.

Yup, Wizards Nation is taking this one seriously. Even bloggers are talking smack.

Bullets Forever with the usual game preview.

Live Game 36 Blog: Washington Wizards @ Boston Celtics
| January 15, 2008 | 3:23 am

Just how chippy will this game get?

Much less the rest of the Celtics, but for one, I’m sure that Kevin Garnett will have something to say about DeShawn Stevenson’s dunk, mean mug and yell towards the Boston bench at the end of Saturday’s game.

Add that to the battle between Paul Pierce and Caron Butler…it got pretty intense in the 3rd Quarter:

8:55 – Ref has to tell Butler and Pierce to calm it down a little. Just a couple gamers getting at it. They went chest to chest as Caron was trying to get to the baseline to inbound the ball. Innocent gamesmanship.

8:19 - Ok, they’re still going at it. Caron on D – quick hands, and Pierce loses the ball out of bounds. Butler says something as he walks closely by, Pierce says something back…Caron then makes a swat movement with his arm as he walks away, but without touching Paul Pierce.

6:37 – …..Big time shot by Caron Butler, especially considering the battle going on between him and Pierce. Butler just hit a sweet step back deuce in Paul Peazey’s grill, 51-47 Celtics.

Live Game 35 Blog – Washington Wizards vs. Boston Celtics
| January 13, 2008 | 12:30 am

Needless to say, this is a big one tonight. Wizards Insider tells us so anyway. Not so much a game of grand standings implications…..although any win helps. But this match tonight against the Celtics is a test. A test to see what kind of team these Wizards are….and honestly, I’m not predicting a win, but I am looking for a fight. And if the Wizards punch the Celtics in the mouth first, they may just pull this one out.

Steve Buckhantz tells us that we are less than 24 hours removed from a win in Atlanta….and that there was no time to celebrate it. Shoot, I sure hope that no one wanted to “celebrate” that Hawks win. Yea, it was a road win….I get excited about those too. But celebration worthy? I think not. The Wizards got 25 points from their bench, and I predicted a win at 22+….but the flow of the game did not sit well with me. The Hawks got some things a little too easily, but seemed to shoot themselves in the foot more often than being stopped on the account of the Wizards…..with the exception of DeShawn’s defense at the end and some Andray Blatche blocked shots.

Bold Prediction:
[if the Wizards total more assists than the Celtics, they will win.]

(part of what doesn’t sit well with me about last night’s game is getting out-assisted 30-19 by Atlanta…with Rajon Rondo out, my “bold prediction” may be a little easier to accomplish)

Bullets Forever with the usual pre-game run down, and some thoughts about the locker room changes. I had my own thoughts there and here.

The Wizards are going to need the A game tonight so let’s start the show:

1st Quarter

Shane Battier starts out hot on Caron Butler, who looks uninterested in worrying about him on defense – Who’s Your Daddy Battier hits Houston’s first two buckets. 4-2 Rockets.

10:30 – No double team on Yao Ming to start…probably because he didn’t receive the ball in good position, so Brendan Haywood was able to hold his ground, forcing Ming to pass.

9:18 – This time Yao gets it right under the basket…..too easy. 9-4 Rockets.

Eddie Jordan, I’ve seen your local Mercedes commercial and I’ll be honest, you can’t act at all brah. Not saying that I’d be better…..well actually, yea, I’d definitely be better. But hey, they don’t give commercials to random bloggers, they give ‘em to NBA coaches — so, good for you captain.

Bullets Forever had the tight game preview, so I’m just going to start the show…..

1st Quarter

11:10 – Haywood gets going early. He has a little bit of a tough time with a double from the top, but he stays persistent and gets the basket. BTH should abuse Nick Collison this game.

10:46 – Kevin Durant fade-away baseline J from the right side over DeShawn Stevenson and some other out-stretched arms – I’m not sure if DeShawn has the reach to feel Durant’s face.
