The Wizards Run-Off, Game-Winning Celebration That Didn’t Count (At least some kid left the gym happy)
| November 21, 2012 | 10:57 pm

The best 0-10 team in NBA history? Pretty much.

Kevin Seraphin hit what was thought to be a game-winner with over seven seconds left in overtime. Kyle Korver hit the go-ahead 3-pointer (thanks to Trevor Ariza) with over one second left. Earlier, Atlanta’s Al Horford missed four straight free throws, and the Hawks got the ball afterward — both times. And of course, we have the young Wizards running off the court, thinking/hoping/wishing that they got their first win, thanks to a last-second Martell Webster tip attempt after a Seraphin miss. But their celebration was moot. The shot came finger tips after the buzzer.

Wow. I can’t even bring myself to type Flip Saunders’ infamous quote at this point. But we will, in honor of the saddest of the sad, show a GIF of the celebration that didn’t count. One day, Wizards, one day.

But hey, at least some kid left the gym happy.

Jordan Crawford Attempts to Shoot Free Throws for Jan Vesely
| November 14, 2012 | 12:08 pm

You know the scene in heist movies where the culprit-to-be is waiting for just the right moment to sneak past the rotating video surveillance cameras, or for the right time to dart past high-powered lasers as they focus their energies to burn/singe/kill intruders in another area of the fortress? Well, all that was kind of like what Jordan Crawford had to deal with as he attempted to go to the free throw line for Jan Vesely last night. Except instead of cameras or lasers, it was three NBA referees.

Let’s first take a look at the action in GIF form… Notice Crawford’s calculated, measured steps, which operate contrary to Crawford’s normal basketball modus operandi. Vesely doesn’t know exactly what to do, he just knows to accept as doctrine whatever the kid from Detroit says in this strange land called America.

The maneuver was actually successful, initially. Crawford even went so far as to make an actual free throw before parties responsible for keeping track of such things noticed. If it weren’t for the sideline referee and/or scorekeeper and/or those darn meddlin’ kids, Crawford might have gotten away with it, too. Instead, the violation was caught and corrected. Vesely, who had been fouled by Tyrus Thomas, went to the line and missed both. Actually, Vesely went on to miss four straight free throws. Actually, Vesely is 1-for-9 from the charity stripe on the season. Let’s check the extended video…

The Jordan Crawford Post-Game Steez Report: Shades, Stars & Bars Edition
| November 9, 2012 | 10:26 pm

Look, guys, the steez never stops. It simply can’t stop. Not when you lose, not when you have a 10:45 flight to catch to Indiana. Steez all day.

Steez don’t like to lose, though. Steez don’t like pretending, either. When asked what happened toward the end of the Wizards-Bucks game on Friday night (a 101-91 loss for the Wiz Kids) when Bradley Beal committed a flagrant-2 foul on Monta Ellis (for which Beal got ejected), and the subsequent push of Beal by Brandon Jennings (who was also ejected), Crawford simply said:

“Just a lot of pretending going on. A lot of pretending, that’s it.”

And about the 0-4 Wizards getting a win, which they’ll have a chance to do on the Pacers’ home court tomorrow? Read more »

Do The Wizards Have Justin Bieber Fever? A Video Discussion with Wittman, Webster & Crawford
| November 5, 2012 | 5:03 pm

Who knew that “Bieber Fever” was going infiltrate Washington Wizards practice Monday? I sure didn’t, initially. The throngs of teenage girls and reluctant dads outside of the Verizon Center parking garage/bus ramp quickly informed me. And now — look at me — I’m mentioning Bieber’s name in a blog post. Swell.

“pre concert warmup. ballin with the wizards. #DC”

That was Justin Beiber’s tweet this afternoon. No, I do not follow him. Otherwise, “ballin’ ” is a term used loosely here. Bieber, who is performing at the Verizon Center this evening, evidently ducked his head into the Wizards practice court and took a gander while Randy Wittman instructed his team, but he didn’t get on the court and start shooting baskets with the Wiz Kids. Do you think Wittman would’ve stopped practice for Bieber anyway? Naw.

Jan Vesely: Likes Sushi and Fast Basketball
| November 5, 2012 | 1:42 am

my name is jan and i like sushi
and the washington capitals

Editor’s Note: Slightly lost in the mix of Washington losing its first two games of the season is Jan Vesely’s play. No, the young Czech isn’t wowing the masses. Nor is he playing well enough to satisfy critics. Still, in only two games his numbers show improvement over last season, and Vesely isn’t playing as timid as he was early this preseason. He only made one of his three jumper attempts against the Celtics on Saturday night, but he took all of them with confidence (although one miss in particular was ill-advised). Again, the biggest issue with Vesely going forward, aside from confidence, will be strength. He certainly got pushed around by Jared Sullinger more than necessary, but he did fight back, increasing his aggression in four minutes during the fourth quarter. Stay tuned, because there is time to be had in exchange for hustle despite the seeming glut in the Wizards’ frontcourt. Randy Wittman’s willingness to sit veterans down the stretch has proven this. Otherwise, Jan got all gussied up to tell you about his Facebook promotion to win a new backpack. And below that is a translation by TAI’s Lukas Kuba (@Luke_Mellow) from an interview that Vesely gave to the Czech outlet, basket.idnes.cz, last Friday. Enjoy. -Kyle W.

“I hope John will be back quickly, because I like fast basketball.” -Jan Vesely

Jordan Crawford: An Abbreviated History of Steez
| November 3, 2012 | 1:49 pm

“Steez” ain’t no big deal, if you got it. It’s no John Wall, coolin’, but steez is enough in it’s own right. And as evidenced above, Jordan Crawford has had steez since he was nine-years old. He’s had so much steez over time that LeBron James once tried to confiscate it. “Naw, we ain’t talk about it. I don’t even know him. … It happened a long time ago, it’s a big thing, so just let it ride,” said Crawford when asked, after being traded to the Wizards from the Hawks as a rookie, about his unnecessarily famed summer camp dunk over LeBron and if the two had ever spoken about it. When asked if he had it on video or if it had been confiscated, Crawford casually said, “Naw, it showed up on YouTube, I think you can go check it out.”

So much steez that Crawford once found some Galaxy Foamposites in his attic, according to him. As a rookie in Atlanta, Crawford acquired some of his steez from Hawks assistant coach Nick Van Exel, who had a lot of steez in his own right. Crawford’s tweets have also been translated by the WizzNuttz — not once, but twice. Now that’s steez.

This year’s “When it’s time to score, I score. That’s how it should be,” on Wizards media day was, ”You know, I always feel if I can see the basket it’s a good shot,” when Crawford was a rookie with the Wizards. Mad steez.

The other day Jordan Crawford tried to explain his steez. He said, “style,” but that’s silly, because Crawford alone can’t even explain steez. But, the DC Sports Bog’s Dan Steinberg did learn about the 90s hip-hop in the process, so there’s that. In any case, let’s take the time to go through an abbreviated history of Jordan Crawford’s steez, whatever that means. Read more »

#WizardsRank: Brendan Haywood, No. 7: Haywood-a, Coulda, Shoulda
| November 2, 2012 | 4:18 pm

Truth About It.net turns a whole five years old at the end of October, which is right about now.

Hard to believe/interesting. Nonetheless, over the life of the site from the 2007-08 season to 2011-12, we’ve seen/lived/suffered through 131 wins, 263 losses, four coaches, two owners, one GM/team president, one Phil Chenier mustache removal, and 56 total players (amazingly, 48 players over the last three seasons).

You may have heard of ESPN’s #NBArank project, now in year two. Now hear of #WizardsRank, where we rank each of those 56 players during Truth About It.net’s five-year run. TAI anonymously polled 27 members of the Wizards pixel establishment — from mainstream media to new media, TAI staffers included, to a few pixel consumers (readers of the site) — and got 17 responses.

Participants were given the full list of 56 in alphabetical order, and included for each player were total games, minutes, PER (player efficiency rating), and WS/48 (win-shares per 48 minutes) only from the last five seasons. Participants were asked to rate each player on the scale of 1-to-10 according to this criteria: on court performance; off court performance; intangibles; and own personal memory. Yes, this is totally subjective, but relatively collective.

#WizardsRank Nos. 56 to 8 have been posted and links can be found at the bottom of this post. —Kyle W.
