Wizards React Quotes: Packing Heat and Shooting Bull-ets

Time for some quick react quotes from the past two Wizards games. It certainly wasn't pretty, but the Wiz were able to squeeze out dubs versus both Miami and Chicago. Considering the injuries, I've become comfortable in the fact that the Wizards can mange wins while trying to find a rhythm. These are not your father's Washington Wizards Bullets...so let's not get spoiled by four playoff appearances in a row. Even so, wins against the Miami Heat and the Chicago Bulls are hardly anything to write a blog post home about, or is it?

Next Up:
Boston Celtics, 7pm, Wednesday April 9th. Onto to the quotes....

Miami Heat

"Last night, when the Wizards clinched their fourth straight playoff appearance with a 109-95 victory over the dreadful Miami Heat, the reaction from the crowd was the basketball equivalent of a golf clap, and players reacted with relief rather than excitement. [Washington Post]

"Wasn't easy to watch former Heat small forward Caron Butler get busy on the Heat, but it sure was easy to ponder the questions of "Why" was he let go in the first place, and "What" do we have to show for it in the aftermath? The Miami Heat got the worst of that Shaq trade in more ways than one. [Crazy from the Heat]

"Yesterday's game was nice because we won, but the casual attitude of the team really bothered me. The only thing the Heat were doing yesterday was shooting the three, and yet we did nothing to emphasize cutting off the three-point line. [Prada, Bullets Forever]

"From my seat, Gilbert Arenas played a much better all-around floor game last night than in his return Wednesday in the loss to Milwaukee. He sparked that 16-6 first quarter run by really pushing the ball in transition. He notched four of his eight assists during that span and appeared to be far more comfortable at the defensive end where he moved better and did a better job of getting over and under screens. [Wizards Insider]

"More than anything else, Gilbert's effectiveness for the rest of the season (especially if he's restricted to 20-25 minutes a game) is going to be measured by how well he creates and capitalizes on fast break opportunities. [Gilbertology]

">>The good news? Two of the next four games will not be televised in South Florida. Consider it the mercy rule. >>At least Pat Riley acknowledged Friday that he sees nothing wrong with Heat fans putting their hopes in securing the No. 1 pick in the draft. >>"If we get the No. 1 pick," he said, "we will have earned that.">>As for Friday's game, the more you see Caron Butler, the more you miss him. (Unlike the more you see Shaquille O'Neal.) [Miami Heat, SunSentinel.com]

Miami Heat - BYE BYE!If it seems like I show the Miami Heat 'No Country for Old Men' poster every time the Miami Heat come up, then yes, I do. If only to rub it in the face of my boy Nawaz from Miami. I always told him that renting players would lead to the downfall of his beloved Miami Heat.

Chicago Bulls

"Brendan Haywood grabbed the offensive rebound, threw down a dunk and turned to a group of heckling Chicago Bulls fans and delivered a message. "They were just talking a little bit of junk," Haywood said. "I just told them, 'Look, man, we're up 19 so just sit down and enjoy the show.'" [Washington Post]

"First of all, I would like to apologize to those of you who had to watch the Saturday game in which the Bulls let Wizards center Brendan Haywood score a career-high 25 points for a 99-87 Bulls loss. It wasn’t even that close. I watched in disbelief as a team with Antwan Jamison and Gilbert Arenas on the sideline, just simply outplayed them. [Bull Riding]

"Am I the only one that thinks Brendan was thinking about this while he was going for 25 and 10 last night? Granted. all the key players from that tussle are gone, but still. [Jake, Bullets Forever]

""Give Brendan Haywood a lot of credit," said Wizards associate head coach Mike O'Koren, who filled in for Eddie Jordan in the pre- and post-game news conferences because the coach battled flu-like symptoms. "Led by him, we outrebound Chicago 53-28, which is really controlling the boards. [Washington Times]

"I even watched this game over the 1st half of KU/UNC. And someone tell Red [Kerr] to buy a freaking iron, his shirts look like he folds them in a fanny pack. [Commenter Rusty Longley on Blog-A-Bull]

Lucky 77 Game Blog: Washington Wizards @ Chicago Bulls

Wizards take the Bulls by the horns.

Wizards take the Bulls by the horns.
Well, that answers Ivan Carter's question, Gilbert Arenas will sit out and rest the knee tonight against the Chicago Bulls, opting out of the back-to-back. Who knows what that means....I thought it was normal rest earlier this season, then all of a sudden, he's having another surgery. Antawn Jamison, as most know, will also be dress-code suited on the bench.

The update is that Gilbert is out as a precaution.

Quarter One

11:41: Can of Tuff Juice from long distance to start.

Even bigger sports night for DC (than on Nats opening night)....got the Caps season finale on the left feed (a win and they're in the playoffs). The Wizards-Bulls front and center, for now UNC-Kansas on the far right.

UCLA hanging around wasn't a surprise (Memphis has been butter on a roll, going in I thought they had too much bench and athleticism for the Bruins) yet, I was surprised that UCLA never made a significant push. Shiiiit. Collison....track stars need not apply in the Final 4 homey.

7:59: Haywood is hitting unbelievable fade-aways....did Steve Buckhantz just call Larry Hughes 'L-Boogie'?...8-8 game.

7:32: Butler is taking heat check threes (made two already, but misses this one), offensive rebounds, Songaila is making nice drives, Haywood is following D-Song's miss with a dunk. The Wiz aim to put Chicago to the test on offense. And tested they are as D-Song caps a 6-0 run and the Bulls call a timeout at 6:50. 12-8 Wizards

6:10: Tuff Juice J - Caron has definitely found his shooting touch these past 3 games. His playoff mind is right....hopefully his teammates will follow suit. 14-8 Wiz.

Before the game, the debate came up on who should've had the ball in the closing seconds of the Bucks game....the consensus among AJ and I is that it should have been Caron.

The 3rd period is starting at the Verizon Center...Caps hold a 1 goal lead in the 'Win and You're In' game.

3:48: Roger Mason....he slips and goes down, the Bulls get transition points to cap an 8-0 run, they're up 16-14.

3:21: Prada is right, Haywood should and is having a good game so far due to the thin Chicago front-court. A dunk gives BTH 6 points a block and a board.

Semin gets a goal for the Caps ......a blazer from long distance, close to the blue line.

2:44: Meanwhile....that early activity on offense has turned into a bit of carelessness for the Wiz. 12-2 Chi town run. No turnovers for Chicago....8 points for the Bulls off Wizz turnovers...20-16.

And now the Caps have a power play....some Panther has been a trippin'

2:20: RNJ knows what to do after a timeout, it's nail a three. Reliable, 20-19 Bulls.

Kansas and UNC get kicked off......I'm a Wiz fan....but the NCAA tournament may, at times, take precedent over the volume of Wizards game -- despite Billy Packer.

0:34: Caron keeps me around with a reverse slam. The Wiz finish the 1st up 3, 25-22. Caron has 10 points, 4 boards and 2 assists. With zero turnovers, Chicago only had 1 assist in the first.

Quarter Two

10:46: The Wizards aren't getting physical enough in keeping Chicago away from the offensive boards. Of course, in the process, Blatche picks up his 3rd foul...he sure can pick up some cheap ones, can't he?

I like the aggressiveness of D-Song....he realizes the personnel situation and adjusts his game accordingly.

Is Tyler Hansbrough a bull in a china shop? Or just an over-excited puppy? How about the Karl Malone comparisons? Both are hard workers...kinda dirty? I'm not sure about Tyler...but Malone sure knew how to use his physicality to hurt others. Kansas is playing with fury on the defensive end.

Wiz and Bulls have hit an offensive lull...the Caps are still staying strong with the 3-1 lead.....playing pretty defensively now as Ovie takes a shift rest.

Timeout and Kansas is up 23-10....UNC looks a little shook. Ty Lawson has not been able to establish the offense.

5:15: Somehow D-Song picks up a tech. I'm not sure what happened, but let me go ahead and say that I like the fire.

UNC is getting run out the gym. They can't do anything offensively the JayHawk D is leading to easy points.

4:28: AD finally gets Washington off 31 points....he's been holding his wrist a lot.......of course, the dirty as hell pick that Chapu put on him isn't helping AD's health. 35-33 Bulls.

4:00: Noah comes close to victimizing D-Song with a throw the ball in the basket dunk like Superman Caron.

3:59: D-Song takes a seat and The Poet gives him some prose....perhaps a Haiku as AJ suggests.

The Caps are 30 seconds away from the playoffs - gotta put the volume up to hear the Verizon Center goes nuts......a Wizards fan can only wish for that atmosphere.

Ovechkin....despite somehow meeting his girlfriend on the Internet, seems like a good guy. Glad the Caps have him locked up for years to come. Ted Leonsis is an example of a great owner....more wishing from a Wizards fan. Ever checked out his blog?

Meanwhile....UNC is still stuck on 10 with 9 minutes left (held scoreless for about 4.5 minutes), Kansas has 33. Nothing easy for Hansbrough...but Kansas is swarming him.

I can hear the media now...taking the POY award from Hansbrough if UNC loses. But he has 8 of the 12 Tarheel points. Lawson is starting to play panicked....and Rush hits another 3, 38-12 Kansas with 7:32 left.

Wizards and Bulls continue to slop it up. Joakim Noah is throwing his weight around....Caron's friends, mom and family made the trip down to Chi-Town...if Caron doesn't do well, she's going to wave a bat at him.

7 ties, 13 lead changes....Bulls take a 43-42 lead into the half. It's a relatively even game stat-wise. The glaring difference seems to be the 9 turnovers for the Wizards to 3 for the Bulls...and accordingly, the Bulls have 6 steals and the Wiz have 1.

87-88 - The last time the Caps, Wizards and Redskins all made the playoffs in the same year.

Kansas hits a shot at the buzzer to maintain a 44-27 lead....if UNC kept it at 15 or below, I would've given them a chance. Now? Well...... our friend Billy Packer said it was over.

The Hawks beat the 76ers tonight....Wizards need to do their job.

Quarter Three

10:20: When Deng is slashing to the basket.....good things happen for Chicago and Tyrus Thomas (with a J, 51-44 Chicago).
9:19: Haywood is taking over with o-boards and running lane hooks against all of Chi-Town.....he's gotten good at doing it against who he's supposed to do it against. 51-49 Bulls.

7:53: I like Haywood's aggressiveness going inside....getting the Bull D rotating and moving, even if he is getting blocked by Noah

6:59: Stevenson hits two in a row....DC, after being down 7, has had an adequately strong 3rd. 57-54 Wiz.

5:51: It's become a fast-paced game as the Wiz take a 61-56 lead....Boylan doesn't like this, timeout Chicago.

Phil C says that Stevenson has become a reliable mid-range shooter..I'd say that's a stretch.

4:28: The glue guy that is D-Song seems to get stronger every day.....just a smart, heady sign by Grunfeld.

3:10: Larry Hughes hits another long shot...if it happens again, somebody is sleeping. 66-63 Wizards.

2:19: I wish the Wiz could get more inside work than what Haywood has been doing....hot shooting like the long J D-Song just hit don't come on offense many nights. 70-63 Wiz.

1:55: Blatche gets a follow 1 handed slam. Crash the boards every time kid.....you can see that his psyche can be very shaky as all hands are on deck to congratulate him coming out the timeout. He got that dunk right on the heads on Noah and Nocioni.

2nd chance points 16-4 DC.

Wiz have the ball for last snot...somehow it ends up as a 2 man game between Roger Mason and Dominic McGuire - no dice but the Wiz hold onto a solid 76-64 lead.

32-13 Wizards run in last 10 minutes of 3rd. As the pessimist, I'm not satisfied...the optimist says it could be a lot worse.

Quarter Four

9:22: RMJunior with a 3 and continued off the bench shine. 81-65 Wiz to a Bulls timeout.

Meanwhile....UNC just cut it to 12, 54-42....14:42 left....curious to see how Kansas will respond.

UNC within 10...my interest has been sparked. This Wizards-Bulls game is pretty boring. So much for that budding rivalry from a couple years ago.

12:20 - Down to 8 for UNC.....Kansas just turned sloppy. 10-0 UNC run in 4.5 minutes.

6:09: Haywood is dunking and talking to either Aaron Gray or the Ref....either way, he is down to business. I like his quote from the other day. "He made his grand entrance and he had his time," center Brendan Haywood said. "Now it's time to get back to business." [Washington Post] 85-69 Wizards.

Psycho T is raging and scoring and getting AND1s...no FT dice. Would this be the comeback of all comebacks? In the Final 4, yes indeed.

I sure hope the Wiz can keep Roger Mason...but I don't think he's going to turn down another 3 year $3 million contract offer like the one Mason got from the Spurs (actually, next time, offers for Roger will be much higher).

3:59: The Bulls are just kinda gunning shots at this point while the Wiz are still taking it inside and doling out some scrap...especially Haywood with dunks putting the team up 19, 93-74.

The Bulls are not completely out of the playoffs....so that's why I'm even more glad/impressed with the impending wizards win. A W would put Washington in the 5th seed, a game ahead of Philly and 2 ahead of the Raptors.

3:19: Mason is dribbling around silly and hitting fade aways. Roger has 14, Wiz up 20.

A running match of desire and desperation between Kansas and UNC now....5 point game with 9 minutes left. Which coach is more to blame?

2:10: The Bulls go on an 8-0 run to cut it to 97-85...not sure of the reason for careless Wizards turnovers.

Random Thought: What if the Bulls kept Tyson Chandler and didn't sign Ben Wallace? It's been covered in the past.

1:13: Not sure why Stevenson is still in the game, gunning with that ankle. Still 97-85.

0:45: Gordon misses a 3 and Gray gets blocked on the put-back...that will pretty much do it.

A great gutty Wizards win. Decent start....a little lull in the middle and then the Wiz just finished off a baffled Chicago Bulls team. Their future once looked so bright.

Haywood is nets a career high 25 points. 99-87 is the final. Very good win.....nba.com box score.

Off to see if Kansas can pull the game out.

3 days off (from games) - stay healthy everyone.

Live Game 58 Blog: Washington Wizards @ Chicago Bulls

Is he in or is he out (for the season).....what exactly is going on with Caron Butler?

At this point of the season, we can all say that we'd rather Butler heal 100% before returning to the court.

My question is: What the hell is going on with the team medical staff?

MRI #1 says strain. MRI #2 says tear. (yea, yea...that could've happened when Tuff Juice tried to come back) The next order: a reevaluation, of course. The franchise is mum on the whole thing because of "policy."

Today's Ivan Carter story in the Washington Post gives us hope that Caron might return this season. As Bullets Forever points out, the Times is not covering the latest. Maybe they don't have a source, maybe they're waiting for something official.

I had a conversation with a friend a while back about the medical staff for the Washington Wizards. I would call this friend a former team source. And this conversation took place back in mid, late-October.....way before the Caron Butler fiasco (per se) and pertaining to Gilbert's 2nd time around knee issues. In any case, his assessment was less than complimentary. At the time, I didn't think much of it....but now......

Hey, who knows? I'm sure they are all professionals who want to do their job to the best of their ability. But let's just say that factoring in this recent history, the medical staff of the Washington Wizards is less than top notch. Of course, we could just wash our hands of this whole thing and scream Curse O' Les Boulez until our lungs are sore.

Whatever it may be, the key words are caution and hope. Just as my friend Adam said in his fill in for the Wizards-Cavs LeBron & JV game:
Caron is sorely missed, but the last thing I want to do is rush him back from that hip flexor injury. I had a buddy in college with the exact same injury, and he had to get surgery and miss an entire season b/c he tried to rush back onto the court after that injury.
At this point, I'm not exactly sure what to do or think......so it's back to the basics: rooting for my favorite, and hometown, NBA team with my full support in the ring.

Argentina was a blast....and I will have some Argentine-related basketball posts in the future. But....it's good to be back in the U.S. of A. It's good to have access to the internet at my finger tips. It's good to be able to catch the Wizards live on TV......

....so let's start the show.

1st Quarter
  • Curious to see this modified Bulls squad. I thought the trade was pretty decent for both teams.
  • Speaking of Argentineans, Danny Granger was suspended for hitting Dirty Andrés Nocioni the other night.....Granger's character has been slightly questionable in the past, but knowing Chapu, it was undoubtedly provoked.
  • Jim Boylan calls a timeout 41 seconds into the game. Joakim Noah seems to be hurt and heads to the locker room - Larry Hughes getting his 1st start for Chi-town tonight.
  • Got the Daniels, Jamison, Haywood, Stevenson, Songaila starting lineup - back to the bench for Andray. In the eyes of Bullets fans, D-Song needs to dig himself out of a hole before the clock even gets running.
  • With Gooden in Chi-town now, I wonder if they're going to go with a Common-Gooden collabo ad campaign.
  • Phil Chenier calls Joakim, Yannick....for some reason, I don't see this as a good sign for the Wizards.
  • Noah comes back to the court after getting the ankle re-taped and Steve Buckhantz proceeds to call him call him "Yoah" - great.
  • .....oh yea, Bulls are up 11-3 three minutes and 45 seconds into the game with the only Wiz points coming off a D-Song J and a BTH FT.
  • Haven't seen the Wiz for a while, so forgive me for noticing AD's high socks if he's worn them in the last couple games - he reminds me of whats-his-name -- Donell Taylor.
  • The Wiz pick things up a little....mostly thanks to Brendan Todd Haywood who has come out really aggressive in the paint. Good to see him throwing his weight around against a physical Bulls team. Chicago timeout, 13-11 lead with 5:26 left.
  • D-Song is all over the court, I guess it's that "against his former team" deal. He makes a great seat and outlet pass to AD who throws down a dunk, gets fouled, falls down hard, misses a FT, and holds his left wrist.
  • What? Luol Deng was traded from the Suns to the Bulls for Jackson Vroman? Completely forgot about that....Phoenix has made a lot of bad moves despite themselves.
  • After a 12-5 Bulls run, they take a 30-23 lead after 1 thanks to hot shooting to the tune of 63.2% (12-19 FG) -- but the eye-popping stat, the Bulls have 10 assists on those 12 FGs, Larry Hughes with 4.
  • Obviously not much going on with the Wiz perimeter defense.....not much discipline on offense either.
2nd Quarter
  • The Bulls are putting on the pressure; Nick Young and Andray Blatche are resembling pipes. It would be nice to make Chi-town pay for their gambling on D....instead, they are converting pressure to points, and a 14 point lead (38-24) with 8:30 left.
  • The Wiz are getting to the line....drawing 2 fouls each on Noah and Gooden, and 3 on Tyrus Thomas so far. But 8-14 from the charity stripe is not going to cut it.
  • Aaron Gray has a perpetual "I just farted so bad that I can't even stand the smell" look on his face.
  • Lotta volleyball action happening on the Wizards offensive end of the floor....nothing positive comes of it.
  • Andray Blatche comes in like he wants to get those starting minutes back. 8 points, 4 rebounds, an assist and a block in about 9.5 minutes of action.
  • Wiz down 40-30 with 5:32 left.
  • Yet, volleyball action on the Bulls end results in loose balls and points for them.
  • 2:40 - Andray Blatche almost turns the ball over, makes a sweet ass move to get to the basket, but seems to take his jump too far away from the hoop and gets blocked. Nothing much going on for DC as the Wiz are down 46-30.
  • The Wizards, all of them, as just taking *pardon my Spanish* Shots a la Mierda -- to the tune of 26.2%.
  • A couple of seams just got ripped. Double techs on DeShawn Stevenson, he leaves the floor after going 1-8 from the field. Steve Buckhantz didn't "see what he said" -- and neither did I, but The Lock Smith got both of them pretty quick after some verbiage with the ref. Maybe the ref just didn't understand him because of that whole wisdom tooth removal thing. Yea, riiiiiiiiight.
  • Halftime.....and what a sad sight, especially after Steve Buck reminds me that the game was once tied at 18. 52-34 Chicago.
  • Yup, as all too common the following phrase has become: "Nobody is going to save the Wizards." -- I would add, "including themselves" at the end of that.
Half Stats I Don't Feel Like Giving:
  • Getting out-shot 51.2% - 27.9%
  • Getting out-rebounded 29-21
  • Getting out-assisted 16-6
  • Getting out-benched 21-9
  • Steve Buckhantz: "I'm glad you're with us tonight" -- He can't be that cruel, can he?
3rd Quarter
  • And Darius Songaila continues to be the lone bright spot for the Wiz. Ouch. (actually, Brendan and Andray weren't bad.....but what's "weren't bad" on a sucky team?)
  • Chicago quick timeout after a 7-0 Wiz run in the first 105 seconds.
  • AJ gets a semi-unjustified charge called on him...his 3rd foul. He gets pretty mad. BTH seems even more angered. AD must calm both of them down.
  • The Wizards seem to believe that they are getting hosed by the refs -- down only 9 with 8:32 left in the 3rd, maybe they will play with a chip on their shoulder.
  • It would also help if Jamison broke out of his 1-11 slump.
  • 16-1 Wiz run now....capped by a Jamison triple. 53-50 Chicago, 6:30 left.
  • Make that 18-1 as Songaila "Buries!" a jumper.
  • 20-1 run...Wiz take the lead on a Jamison tip. 5:20 left.
  • 22-1 run...long jumper by Roger Mason.
  • Boylan finally takes a timeout, 5:03 left. I'm still not sure what just happened....a lot of wet net for the Wiz.
  • Of course, Chi-town scores 4 straight after the TO, 57-56 Bulls.
  • The game goes back and forth with some unsightliness from both teams.....but Washington is able to keep their momentum and hold strong with a 3 point lead heading into the final quarter 69-66 (An Andray Blatch dunk off a nice set-up at the buzzer did not count -- he should have gotten it off with much more urgency).
  • So what did the Wiz do statistically in the 3rd?
    • Roger Mason Jr aka the Foreman Grill jacked in 12 points on 5-7 shooting.
    • Wiz increased game FG% by 12.4%.
    • Wiz decreased rebound margin deficit by 6.
    • Wiz decreased assist margin deficit by 5.
4th Quarter
  • A little back and forth between the teams...including a nice Nick Young hanging make until.....
  • Oh. My. Lord. An absolute MONSTER dunk by Chapu Nocioni on Darius Songaila. Poor D-Song, they're printing the posterization of that dunk on a million soccer balls in Argentina right now. CORRECTION: That was Oleksiy Pecherov AKA Stewie and not Darius Songaila -- I'm sure that's not the first time that big white Euros were confused.
  • Wiz still up 3, 75-72, 8:23 left.
  • Great, Nocioni is making 3s with half a shoe on -- 14 points, 5 rebounds for him off the bench. Wiz up 79-77 with 6:26 left.
  • RMJ doesn't care about that fool as he hits a reverse lay-up, 81-77 with 5:34 left -- the Bulls are forced to call a timeout with Nocioni's shoe completely off.
  • Blatche is still balling hard, he has 17 points.
  • Joakim Noah's FT form looks like a turd flushing down a toilet in Australia. He, nonetheless, hits 2 to put the Bulls up 84-83 with 3:30 left.
  • D-Song makes up for getting dunked on with a big block on a Larry Hughes driving attempt.
  • Andray Blatche is being "worked on" by the training staff.
  • An unbelievably excited Steve Buck gets hyped by a D-Song tip in after a missed FT that puts the Wiz up 87-84.
  • 2:06 - Huge O-Bound and FLUSH by BTH (great play by him, he accordingly crashed the boards after his post entry pass to AJ), Wiz up 89-84....Haywood gets a block on the other end, but the Bulls recovers and Hinrich gets an open 3.
  • Sure glad that Haywood is in at the end of this game. AJ FTs....Big-Time BTH rebound after a Hinrich miss (is 'Kirk' really their go-to guy?) and an AD runner on the other end puts Washington up 93-87 with 1:15 left.
  • Uh oh...Nocioni triple after a careless Wiz turnover. 93-91 DC with 39 seconds left.
  • What a break.....(now the Wiz need about 100 more "breaks"). The Wiz almost turn the rock over, the ball gets deflected and somehow lands in Jamison's hands by himself under the basket. He gets the hoop And1, Wiz go up 5.
  • The Bulls miss on the other end, the Wiz get the ball, Chicago fans boo, Daniels hits 1 FT....and that basically does it.
  • 97-91 Washington Wizards! What a great comeback after being down 20 points and a Lock Smith in the 2nd quarter....and to sustain the game after that. Uhhh....wow?
US-A-OK! What a win....I think just about all of us wrote this team off at half-time, but what a gutsy performance. As Phil C says...there were a lot of heroes tonight. I'm splitting the game ball in 3: to Roger Mason Jr., to Brendan Haywood, to Andray Blatche. Thanks for the welcome back gift Wizards.

Live Game 24 Blog - Washington Wizards vs. Chicago Bulls

Okay, back to blogging.....it's been a couple days. Overload at work, knee surgery earlier today (more on that later)....yada, yada, yada. The most important thing, I made it home just in time to catch the Wizards-Bulls game. Since I was slightly incapacitated, my boy AJ is going to help me out. But of course, I could not help taking some notes.

So let's start the show...

1st Quarter

KB
Ok, AJ did not make it home in time for the 1st quarter (or second) and I wasn't up for taking notes just yet. And perhaps this should've been the case for the whole game since the 1st was the best quarter of the game for the Wizards. They came out with some energy, moved the ball well, and Caron Butler was leading the offensive flow with 6 assists. At the end of one, the Wizards led 27-20. I believe the Wizards shot over 50% for the 1st. And then came the......

2nd Quarter

KB
Here, the Wizards totally forgot about and ignored all the good work from the 1st. I'm not sure if the Bulls were packing the zone in, they did get a defensive 3 second call in the 1st, or if the rotation got jacked causing the Wizards to fall out of their rhythm.

I mean, the copious amount of Js that the Wizards took in the 2nd were relatively open, they just weren't dropping. At that point, someone, anyone needs to recognize this & go inside.

In the middle of the drought, with about 4:11 left in the quarter, Eddie Jordan subbed Caron Butler, Brendan Haywood, and DeShawn Stevenson for Songaila, Andray Blathce, and Roger Mason.....that didn't help inside scoring one bit.

To sum up the ugliness, the Wizards were outscored 25-13 by the Bulls in the 2nd and shot a ridiculous 13% from the field. I repeat, ridiculous.

At the half, Phil Chenier mentioned that Wizards got a false sense of security from their strong 1st quarter where they had a 13 pt lead at one point. But really, where does this team get off getting any sense of security? Because of the struggle which has defined this season, they have absolutely no right.

The Bulls are not having a great season, but they are still the Bulls. A team with which (because of the playoff series a couple years ago, a pre-season fight the next season, and the ever present dirtiness of Andres Nocioni).....the Wizards have a budding rivalry. They should have been more than ready for this game.

The Wizards have had a lot of strong 3rd quarters this year, so we will see. But that last quarter was highly disappointing.

And 13 has not been a good # for the Wiz. Yea, they were up 13 at one point in the 1st. But, they only scored that much in the 2nd while shooting that number in FG%.

3rd Quarter

AJ
So from my initial assessment of the game, we look a bit lethargic. We are ice cold from the floor, the transition defense is not in sync, we seem to be making some poor decisions with the ball offensively, and to top it all off Jamison just hurt his ankle.

The Wiz started the quarter 1 for 8. That certainly is not the way to continue a winning streak.

The Bulls are a strange team. They had boundless potential at the start of the year. And here they are at the bottom of the Central division looking like they are going to be missing the 2007 playoffs. Still want to entertain a trade to ‘The Windy City’ Kobe?

The Wizards can’t buy a bucket. That translates to 28% from the floor. I am sure that pull up jumpers with a hand in your face by Nick Young can’t help the situation. I hate to be negative, but our play looks pretty poor right now.

KB
Yea, Nick Young was 1-8 for the first half, Bean Burrito...errr...the "City" has been throwing up some crap.

The Bulls lead is extended to 9 to start the 3rd. 14-0 run for the Bulls in total.

9:00 - I also see Jamison limping around. Steve Buck says it's his knee, but I think he just caught a charley horse. Antawn waives off checking out of the game.

1st timeout by Eddie Jordan. The Bulls run in game is 18-2 now. Wiz down 53-42.

Since they're calling it more, can we get a stat on times a player carries the ball? I bet BBNY (Bean Burrito Nick Young) would lead the league (or at least rookies) in avg per 48 minutes.

These jumpers are starting to piss me off. Yes, the 28% makes me sick and I'm ready to blame that for my knee hurting.

Point Caron needs to step it up and control the team himself.

AJ
I am hoping that Caron’s “Hakeem like” post move will get a little run started for us.

I was right….after that shot we are on a 14-2 run and AJ is at the line to cut the deficit to two.

I really do not enjoy playing the Bulls. They present so many different match-up problems for us. We can pretty much handle them at the guard spot, but they have so many long athletic players. Deng and Tyrus Thomas really cause us problems on the offensive end.

KB
The bell has rung for Butler indeed, an assist, a drive, couple 3s for Tuff Juice. The 14-2 was definitely sparked by his energy.

The 13 pt deficit is cut to 2 in less than 2 minutes. 57-55 bulls. 5 minutes left in the 3rd.

I'm liking the lineup in the game for the Wiz at the end of the 3rd. Brendan Haywood, Andray Blatche, Caron Butler, DeShawn Stevenson, and Antawn Jamison. This squad does not appear in the top 20 5-man floor units for the Wizards on 82games.com. I want to see it more. How about that shirt Wizznutzz?

Bulls aren't giving up easily though...combined with 5 3rd quarter turnovers for the Wizards. Chi-Town just got their 1st turnover of the quarter with 48 seconds left. The Wiz end the quarter down 2, 65-63.

AJ
Yea, the momentum we had after Caron’s moves really fizzled out. On a bright note, Caron is two rebounds away from his second career Triple-Double. There must be something about me blogging and Caron dropping dimes, snatching boards, and scoring buckets!

Caron and AJ combined for 21 of the Wizards 23 points in the quarter. That tandem is great. Only problem is that AJ typically has trouble creating his own shot, but couple him with Caron and you have something special.

4th Quarter

AJ
Okay, so despite our rocky beginning and end to the third, we are only down two to start the fourth.

Here is my Andray Blatche rant again. This guy is a beast. He has started a nice little run with defensive presence. He just got a great block on Aaron Gray, then another on Tyrus Thomas that led to an easy Butler lay-in. The more I watch him, the more excited I get about his potential. Just imagine when he 1. gets stronger 2. bulkier and 3. more offensive moves on the low block. He could be a solid piece to that Washington championship puzzle.

Maybe I shouldn’t have started talking bout Andray. No sooner did I finish up, the Bulls go on a 7-0 run to push back out in front.

KB
Message to Roger Mason: NEVER fake a cut to the basket, especially in this offense. He does it at about the 8:30 mark and D-Song's pass goes out of bounds. The Bulls lead is at 7.

Sure hope the Wiz didn't use it all up in that mid-3 quarter run.

With 6:42 left, DeShawn hits a trey - really needed that. 77-73 bulls.

I've been a Roger Mason advocate, but I'm not sure he should be shooting this much.

AJ
They just showed a picture of Joe Smith and Ben Wallace. Both of those guys are connected to D.C. (Wallace played his early days here while Smith was a standout in College Park.) What most amazes me is how differently those two guys paths were yet there they are, on the same bench making roughly the same amount of money. Funny how life can turn out sometimes huh?

Somebody had best stop Tyrus "just give me the money" Thomas if we want to win. The guy has made two 15 foot jump shots and he has the Bulls all fired up here. With 5:08 to play in the 4th the Wizards are down 4 and we don’t seem to have much energy. This looks like a much different Wiz team than we are used to seeing.

KB
Yea, where the heck did Ty Thomas get that jumper from?

DeShawn Stevenson just pulled a Zach Randolph...(I mean did you see that move by Randolph when the Knicks faced the Warriors the other night? After getting beat on an o-bound, he thought he got fouled when on the real, cat can't jump worth a lick. I can probably count the dunks he's had in his career on two hands. Well, ZacH started complaining to the ref while the ball was still in play, then, he turned his back on his man, Troy Murphy, to complain some more. What happened? T-Murph knocked down a three. Ladies and gentlemen, your "Built on Character" New York Knicks)

Back to DeeeShawn and the Wiz game. Black Snake had it stolen on a break, he complained and/or glared at the ref and didn't get back on D. The Bulls ended up getting an o bound on their possession down the court. Sorry, but I just can't stand when players want to complain while the clock is running. What are you accomplishing here? It's not like the ref is going to change the call.

After the game, I think Eddie Jordan was asked about this by a reporter (I couldn't exactly hear the question), but his response was essentially, "We'll have to go back and look at the tape to see if the complaints were legit." I really don't give a damn if they were legit. You don't stop playing the damn game unless the whistle blows. Period.

Roger Mason makes a trey ball with about 4:45 left. Forget what I said earlier, keep shooting young man.

Caron Butler Triple-Dub alert....he gets the basket on the other end and the Wiz finally gain lead. 80-79

AJ
I wonder if he has clauses in his contract that pay him a little bit more cash with statistic milestones such as triple doubles.

KB
Nick Young hasn't played in a while. Hmmmm.

When will people learn? The Wizards Caron Butler commercial, Bill Simmons..... it's Tuff Juice, not Tough Juice.

2:19 An amazing block by Tyrus Thomas -- on Antawn Jamison, Ty also catches the ball coming down, and fell out of bounds, being hit as Jamison went falling. Foul on Antawn Jamison. On the replay, it looked like AJ got fouled.

Another hack job by refs...AJ doesn't get a call on a drive, Bulls take the ball down, score and go up 9 with 1:27 left. Debatable whether the call was legit on not by Steve Buck and Phil Chenier.

AJ
Whata turn of events here. The normally calm and collective AJ just picked up a tech as the Bulls finish a fast break and put the Bulls up 8. So with 1:20 left we are down nine and do not have the ball.

This is the first time that I have seen this year where the Wizards failed to capitalize on an opportunity to beat a team that is playing the second game of a back-to-back. More important than ending a four game winning streak, we lose to the Bulls at home, and we won’t see them here at the Phone Booth again this year.

Most importantly, I hate the damn Bulls. They always give us trouble and Nocioni is a prick.

So looks like today wasn’t your day KB. You got that knee cut open and you had to come home to see Caron’s triple double wasted in a 95-84 loss.

KB
I mean seriously, the Wizards essentially got done in by Aaron Gray (10 pts, 10 rebs, 5 asts) & Tyrus Thomas (14 pts, 3 blks, 2 stls, 6 rebs).

That 11-0 run by the Bulls after the Wizards gained the 80-79 lead did the trick. The L is official.

This game almost makes me angrier than game 16 in Philly, at least the Wiz had a chance at the end of that one. 12 second half turnovers, only Butler and Jamison in double figures.... on top of the wasted Trip-Dub by Juice of course. A horribly inconsistent effort all around. The Bulls played like poop and won. And how bout that?

Quick Web Hits - truthaboutit.net

>> Our very own Agent Zero now has a bond with Boston fans. He also defends the comments he made in Sports Illustrated in his new blog entry.

>> Wow....Chicago Bulls fans are even more upset with their team's 0-3 start than the Wizards fans are. I guess it's more surprising because most "experts" picked the Baby Bulls to do better than the Wiz. Not really sure why. But to be chanting Kobe Bryant's name during games? That would never happen in DC...I hope.

>> Speaking of chanting names, Rocket's fans are calling for more run for Stevie Franchise. Look, I know he's a local DC guy, but I've never been a fan of Steve Francis. For one, I can't stand it when privileged athletes whine about where they get selected in the draft, but to cry? On top of that, his 'ball pounding a hole in the floor' ways are not exactly conducive to a Rick Adelman offense.

>> Hey, if you're going to play rough, you gotta protect ya boys.

>> So, are you saying that we're going to see a Vitamin Water 'Vote for Hedo' campaign now?

>> Remember this guy? [Utah Jazz Alumni Section near the bottom of the page]. I'm sure you remember that the Washington Wizards acquired him from the Orlando Magic for Terry Davis, Big Benny Wallace, Tim Legler and Jeff McInnis...but did you know that we traded him to Grizzlies for Dennis Scott, Cherokee Parks, Obinna Ekezie and Felipe Lopez? Guess Ike just couldn't mesh with the nucleus of Mitch Richmond, Juwan Howard, Rod Strickland, Tracy Murray, Rip Hamilton, Jahidi White, and Don Reid. Oh, the Coach Darrell Walker days. But don't forget the WizzNutzz Ike Austin Cheesboot.

>> Ladies and Gentlemen, introducing the Tiddy Bear...caught this on the late, late episode of Talk Soup last night (the only entertainment show I'd eeeeever watch). Too much unintentional comedy here for words. I know a certain friend, B. Dillinger....this thing would be right up his alley.

>> In case you missed it, The Onion's 2007 NBA Predictions. I kinda want to see bullet #3 happen....maybe I should bring my slide-whistle to the next Wizards game. Don't ask why I have one....
