Gut Reaction: No Jail For Gilbert Arenas
| March 26, 2010 | 4:54 pm

Call me surprised. Call me a little bit excited. Call me surprised again.

And call a bunch of other people pissed off because the sentence was too light. Oh well, they’ll get over it.

The sentencing has come down and Gilbert Arenas will receive two years probation, 30 days in a halfway house and must perform 400 hours of community service. He also must donate $5,000 to the victims of violence fund and must register as a gun offender.

The start of today didn’t have a particularly odd feel to it … at least for me in terms of it being sentencing day for Arenas. I suppose some will call “poetic” the fact that it happened to be rainy/cloudy/gloomy weather here in D.C. to start the morning. But now for Gilbert, the sun is shining.

It’s also my mom’s birthday, so I’ve often thought how lucky I am to have her … and that I certainly need to call her more often … especially in contrast to the relationship Gilbert had with his now deceased mother. Or rather, the one that he didn’t.

Gilbert Arenas Officially Pleads Guilty To Felony Charge, Will Be Sentenced On March 26 [UPDATED]
| January 15, 2010 | 3:34 pm

What I know from Twitter reports & the D.C. Superior Court website (so far):

  • Case: 2010 CF2 000904 United States Vs. ARENAS, GILBERT J
  • Arenas pleads guilty to felony charge of “Carrying a Pistol Without a License [Outside Home or Place of Business]“
  • Among other guns, the prosecution is saying that Arenas brought a .500 Magnum Silver Smith & Wesson revolver to the Verizon Center on December 21.
  • Prosecution also says that Arenas threatened to “shoot [Crittenton] in the face during plane confrontation.”
  • The government is recommending “low end” guidelines, which would include six months or less in prison (could be no time in prison, could be more time in prison – it is all up the the judge at this point).
  • Arenas has been released and must surrender his passport and “refrain from possessing guns.”
  • Sentencing for this case will be on March 26, 2010; the Wizards play the Bobcats in Charlotte on that date.
  • The judge has declined to expedite sentencing to a sooner date. Evidently the judge was open to prior week, but Arenas’ lawyer was not available.

Report: Gilbert Arenas’ Dirty Harry Revolver Just One of Several Hundred Guns
| January 13, 2010 | 1:46 pm

We know that Gilbert Arenas collects various basketball jerseys. Well, evidently he collects guns too. WTOP is reporting that Arenas has, at times, owned several hundred guns, including a ‘Dirty Harry Revolver’, which, of course, is in addition to his Austin Powers-esque gold-plated Desert Eagle. There’s always more to this story, isn’t there? When will it stop?

via WTOP:

As a grand jury continues to hear the details of the gun incident involving Gilbert Arenas, WTOP has learned the Washington Wizards’ star has — at times — owned several hundred guns.

Multiple sources tell WTOP that Arenas moved those weapons out of his Virginia home within the past year, long before the incident at the Verizon Center.

A Tale of Not Paying Gambling Debt & Pranks With Guns: Your Washington Wizards
| January 2, 2010 | 4:26 pm

It’s all there. Gambling thousands on chartered planes. A certain $111 million point guard ducking out on debt owed to JaVale McGee. Pranks where guns are laid out in a statement of machismo being called “horse-play.”

It all derives from Gilbert Arenas and some of his teammates are becoming increasingly weary of his apathy toward consequences. Hard to believe that this guy has yet to grow up.

It’s all there, even what Ernie Grunfeld might do with the team.

Go read everything at Mike Jones Sports. Our friend, formerly of the Washington Times, has put out the best reported story on the Arenas-Crittenton gun situation yet. What are you waiting for? Go read already.

When Guns Are Drawn: A Mixtape for Gilbert Arenas and Javaris Crittenton
| January 1, 2010 | 5:11 pm

When I first learned about Gilbert Arenas and guns on Christmas Eve, way back when it was as “innocent” as him getting the firearms out of his humble, grotto-encased abode because he didn’t want them around his new kid when he already had another kid for a couple years, I tweet-dedicated a Christmas song to him … Onyx, Throw Ya Guns.

This latest news warrants its own playlist. And since the good folks at WizzNutzz are making mixtapes for JaVale McGee, I figure why not join in on the fun.

This one’s for you Gilbert and Javaris. I don’t know much about astrological signs, but it seems like Capricorns don’t get along … especially when it involves gamblin’.

Oh yea, Happy Birthday Javaris. You turned 22 on New Year’s Eve. Hope you woke up feeling well today. Arenas will turn 28 on Wednesday.

Wizards Make Official Statement on Arenas-Crittenton Gun Situation
| January 1, 2010 | 1:04 pm

“The Washington Wizards take this situation and the ongoing investigation very seriously.  We are continuing to cooperate fully with the proper authorities and the NBA and will have no further comment at this time.”

Nothing much here from the franchise, just an acknowledgement.

I was g-mail chatting with Tim Varner of the Spurs blog 48 Minutes of Hell about Wizards and guns earlier. In discussing the inevitability that the real story would have eventually come out (by the way … check out what Mike Jones has to say about this on his new blog), Tim mentioned that it might have been better if the team fully disclosed from the beginning to make it seem like they were taking care of the situation. I might be inclined to agree.

Seems like such a weird/tough thing to handle from media & PR perspective. Perhaps the first instinct is to cover up bad news that is, “unprecedented in the history of sports,” according to the head of the NBA Players’ Association, Billy Hunter. Who knows.

I’ll have some more thoughts on this situation to come.
